People with ADHD often go through cycles of burnout but when you’re a mother, these cycles can be so much harder due to the pressures that come with motherhood.
You can find yourself feeling anxious, struggling with negative thoughts and in some cases, you may suffer from depression.
But struggling with burnout shouldn’t be a ‘normal’ part of motherhood.
In this blog post, I am breaking down what ADHD mom burnout is, how to spot the signs, and the best strategies to overcome it!
What is ADHD Mom Burnout?
ADHD mom burnout is similar to the burnout that other moms feel, however, the difference is that people with ADHD tend to go through more regular cycles of burnout.
People with ADHD often have moments when they hyper-fixate on certain tasks and then can suddenly feel unproductive and unmotivated.
When you’re a mom with ADHD, these symptoms can be exaggerated because of the differences in our brains.
What Are The Symptoms of Burnout?
ADHD mom burnout can vary from person to person but here are the most common symptoms:
Feeling overwhelmed
Easily overstimulated
Mom guilt
Mom rage
Reduced productivity
A feeling of hopelessness
Fatigue
Anxiety
Depression
If you are experiencing multiple of these symptoms, you may be struggling with mom burnout.
How to Overcome ADHD Mom Burnout
Now that you know what ADHD mom burnout is, here are my top strategies to overcome it!
Consider The Root Cause of Your ADHD Mom Burnout
The first step in overcoming ADHD mom burnout is to consider what the root cause is.
It can be as simple as just saying ‘yes’ to too many things or just not having the right supportive community around you.
Taking some time to journal your thoughts or speaking with a coach or therapist can help you get to the root cause of the issue.
Set Realistic Expectations
The next step in overcoming ADHD mom burnout is to start setting realistic expectations.
As moms, we can often put so much pressure on ourselves to do as much as possible for our kids but adding too many things to your plate can be a recipe for disaster.
Instead, start setting realistic expectations for yourself. By doing this, you can be a far happier mom for your kids.
Prioritize Self Care
Prioritizing self-care is a huge factor in overcoming mom burnout.
It can be so easy to get caught up in caring for everybody else but yourself.
Most moms I work with don’t even know where to start when it comes to taking their own self-care seriously!
This is why I design personalized self-care plans that break down exactly how to start implementing self-care into your motherhood journey so that you can be a happier, healthier mom.
Ask for Help
Asking for help as a mom is one of the best things that you can do to improve your mental health. Simply knowing that you’re not alone can make all of the difference.
I started building my own community of moms online when I was struggling with burnout myself.
Since then, I have expanded into developing group coaching programs. As a therapist, I work with this group of moms to help them know how to take better care of themselves!
This group is always so supportive and is the perfect way for you to find new mom friends too! Email me at imayes@busylifebalance.org
Diversify Your Life
As a mom, you can find yourself in the same routine every single day but when you have ADHD this can feel boring or unfulfilling which later leads to burnout.
By diversifying your life, you gain opportunities to meet new people and boost your energy.
Try volunteering or going to a class where your child can try something new and you can meet some other moms!
Set Healthy Boundaries
Just like having realistic expectations for yourself, setting healthy boundaries is also important when overcoming ADHD mom burnout.
Healthy boundaries can look like making sure you finish work on time and saying no to things that drain you.
The most important part, though, is to know your boundaries and stick to them!
